Patrik Diethelm on the AEON Windsurf foil by Wind Lounge

Patrik Diethelm AEON Windsurfing Foils Design details interview by Wind Lounge

I learnt about Patrik Diethelm while ago while Windsurfing and getting F2 boards shaped by him (I still own two of them). Also when ISAF went for a new design to replace the Olympic Mistral, Patrik took a prototype of his own to the test, I managed to exchange some mails at the time of the test. His proto was a good one but has some leakage issues and the lobby of Neil Pryde also was key for the RSX to be selected.

Patrik continued working for other big brands and some years ago he finally launched his own brand.

Talking to a good friend I introduced to windsurf foil coming from Cats, I told him that for sure his products would have much technical background and testing by Patrik directly, and good enough his Patrik Boards brands have grown plenty expanding to Wingfoil too.

But the core of Patrik is windsurfing and in this interview by the guys at Wind Lounge (check their channel here) he goes deep in the detail on the unique design, development and testing approach he uses, as he has a pretty good riding level himself of his Windsurfing AEON Foil system.

Most interesting too how he understands that CFD and Americas Cup level designers and tools are are good reference for Windsurfing foils but Not near definitive, as in Windsurfing the rider has an x100 more key factor than an AC boat or even our small racing cats.

Also a big contrast he makes for control vs raw speed.

Long interview but pretty insightful for those interested in Design & Development. And I couldn’t agree more than its ideal for a designer to have a good level of riding his own creations.
