A-Cat Aus Nats 2023: Brewin reaches 35knots

Photos by Gordon Upton via IACA fb. A couple of seasons ago we had reports for top A-Class guys doing 29-30knots. This week at the 2024 Australian Nats, Steve Brewin reached 35knots on a practice run on board an Exploder D3 he helped to develop and his own designed & built Brewin DS.

35knots is about the max speed a Moth gets, so its an impressive number. We also heard today that Aussie James “Kamikaze” Clark has reached 37-38knots himself, which can be possible coming from him no prob, but we don’t have recorded proof yet.

Brewin’s run was done in 20-21knots and higher gusts as reported by Gordon, venue is Lake Macquarie flat conditions.

We wonder which speeds can be achieved with the short mast (proven by Brewin, Landy and others) , and with a proper windsurf style rig (we have one drawn and send to Steve some seasons ago or modern wing setup. Issues with hard wings have been always the lack of depower them.

Mischa is also working on some kind of inflatable wing. We’ll see how that project goes as he has a good history on implementing efficient developments , for instance he established a proven DS mainsail in the A-Cat and F18 Classes.
