2024 Worrell 1000 – Notice of Race

“The Worrell 1000 Race” is an offshore long-distance beach catamaran sailboat race to be held between 04-19 May 2024 in the Atlantic waters between South Florida and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Dates are still in development, and the duration of the event is expected to be two weeks (see Race Schedule below). The Race will cover approximately 1000 miles with overnight stops at multiple locations along the East Coast of the United States. The Organizing Authority (OA) for the Worrell 1000 Race will be “Worrell 1000 Race Reunion Race, Inc.”, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, (dba “Worrell 1000 Race”).
Boats:
The Race shall consist of one class with scoring based on overall elapsed time. Eligible boats are Formula 18 class that are in compliance with current International Formula 18 Class Rules and with a current and valid measurement certificate. The Worrell 1000 Race OA shall have final discretion as to which boats and classes of boats are to compete.
Rules:
The Race will be governed by the rules as defined by the current edition of “The Racing Rules of Sailing” and the Class Rules of the boats sailing, except as modified by this Notice of Race and the Worrell 1000 Race Sailing Instructions. The registered sailors must be members in good standing of their applicable national Formula 18 association.
Race Schedule:
The Race will be conducted in stages with each stage starting and ending on the beach. There may be a possibility of some of the legs being sailed at night. Checkpoints are currently in development and are not finalized, but are expected to include:
Day 1: Hollywood, FL to Jensen Beach, FL
Day 2: Jensen Beach, FL to Cocoa Beach, FL
Day 3: Cocoa Beach, FL to Daytona Beach, FL
Day 4: Daytona Beach, FL to Jacksonville Beach, FL
Day 5: Jacksonville Beach, FL to Tybee Island, GA
Day 6: Tybee Island, GA (lay day)
Day 7: Tybee Island, GA to Folly Beach, SC
Day 8: Folly Beach, SC to Surfside Beach, SC
Day 9: Surfside Beach, SC to Wrightsville Beach, NC
Day 10: Wrightsville Beach, NC to Atlantic Beach, NC
Day 11: Atlantic Beach, NC to Hatteras, NC
Day 12: Hatteras, NC to Kill Devil Hills, NC
Day 13: Kill Devil Hills, NC to Virginia Beach, VA
Day 14: Awards Banquet, Virginia Beach, VA
Note: These checkpoints are subject to change due to individual beach conditions such as beach erosion, etc.
Registration:
Only experienced sailing teams will be allowed to participate in the race due to the potential danger involved. Sailors that have not previously competed in the Race may be required to submit a sailing résumé. Registration covers Race fees only. When registration opens, registration information will be available on the official web site. Registration will be limited to the first 15 teams accepted by the Worrell 1000 Race Organizing Authority, and with payment of the entry fee.
