Portugal: SadoCat Raid 2015, Report & Results

Report & pics sent by Rui Duarte: “This past weekend we had a huge success with “SADOCAT2015/XVI Raid Bicasco”, part of “XV Jogos do Sado”, with 32 crews coming from all over Portugal to race in Setúbal. We had plenty of sun, wind and fun!

On the first day, the wind was a bit shifty and patchy, blowing between 5 and 12 knots, with very frequent shifts, which made the race very tactical…


By the end of day 1, the F18 dominated the podium, with Luis Santos/João Duarte (F18) and António Santos/Rui Duarte (F18) finishing the race separated by only 2s after 1:40h of racing and position shifts. In third place, and always on the lookout for error coming from these two crews were Gustavo Quintela/Duarte Areosa, also on F18. When considering corrected time, Miguel Galvão/Inês Galvão on a Dart 18 arrived only 9 minutes after the first crew, reaching a very good 4th place. To close the top 5, Eric Foulon/Alexandre Soares, also on F18.

To complete the day, we had barbecue, music, lots of beer and fun!
For day 2, there was a doubt of whether the thermal SW, typical of this venue, would come or not. But around 12h it came and with style.

By the time of the start, it was blowing between 12 to 15 knots and then growing, giving place to an incredibly fast start. The crews that had dominated the previous day quickly got the lead, creating some space between them and the competition, but not too much…
By the end of the first leg, the sailors had to go through some natural islands near Tróia, with some shallow water, making the boats with daggerboards to slow down a bit and to sail very carefully. All the others went through it very fast, with speeds around 15 knots which was spectacular for the public.

So, on the end of this second race, victory went to Joaquim Silva/Carla Rubio on HC16, sending Luis Santos/João Duarte on an F18 to 2nd place. On third position, Tiago Clara/Catarina Carmelo on HC16 also had a very good race.
