A-Cat Worlds 2024, Punta Ala. Day 3

Light winds this Wednesday at Punta Ala, the usual mix of conditions this great place always delivers put sailors to test their skills to the max. In the Foilers fleet you needed to lift off in 5-6 knots of wind and the Classics were urged to master the super technical downwinds in light weather.

The great aspect of the Foiling A-Cat is it versatility, you can actual race in 5 knots floating mode as Classics do, but you have the chance, if you are up to the challenge, to start foiling in that same scenario, giving you a 6th gear & Turbo boost over the rest. This not Pros vs rest of the fleet but even among top 10 sailors too.

Thtat’s why tracking are so valuable key asset to major A-Cat & F18 races, you can see first hand how races develop and appreciate tactics and speed.

Second race was for current leader Kuba Suroviec. The Polish (literal) Rocket was lapping mid fleet sailors cruising at 6knots while Kuba passed them at flying 15kknots! Impressive sight that I was lucky to witness Punta Ala 2015 with Mischa & Ashby doing the same.

If you want to test your actual real foiling skills you need to race Foiling As.

And if you think you are a Floating Top Gun, dare to race the Classics. You are say 18 – 40 yrs old in your prime? Pfffff be prepared to be wiped out by 80yrs old Living Legend like Ben Hall. Ah you say it was light winds, hmmm then wait for the breeze and Scotty Anderson will give you lesson how to master 20knots and 2mts waves at 71…

In the middle you will have Doreste, Landy and Jacek, the ‘youngters’ among the top pack, who will show you how to race Cats at max performance level.

That’s the beauty of the A-Class and why we’ve been pushing for it for years now. This weekend I started racing F18s with one of my kids, 14yrs old just fresh from Opti, I told him to come directly to race cats, as he will be able to race them at top level even passing his 60s in both Classes. He got the message clearly after a great regatta and went home smiling eager to race cats again.
I will hand him the A-Cat this season.

That’s was always the mission of this blog/web, to bring more kids to Catamaran Racing and convert grownups for them to see the Light!
