2023 Western Australia Formula 18 for Colby & Dubbelaar
Bit late news, sent after the event too by our mate Colby. With a vice title in 2022 at Clearwater along Kai Colman, we would like to see Gavin grabbing an F18 Title with the Scorpion, we have seen Mischa (that one took ages and it was so good for him to get it on our design) , later Danny & Kostas, 2019 for Bundy for whom we got boat & sails, and 2021 for Legend Mitch. Now is time for this Aussie to grab his, although we call him ‘Old Man’, for being in the F18 Class since day 1, Colby is fact 4-5 yrs younger than Bundock, so many years left to get his.
The Western Australia Formula 18 State Titles 2023
held over two days, saw some exciting sailing action however with only four races sailed in total. The event was characterized by light winds, especially on day one, and extremely shifty SE winds, making it very tactical for the sailors. The winning team comprised Gavin Colby and Pete Dubbelaar, who sailed consistently throughout the event.
On day one, the breeze was light, and the sailors had to be strategic in their course positioning. Despite the challenging conditions, the sailors remained close, with Gav and Pete taking the lead. On day two, James Clark stepped in for Brett Burvill, and the wind conditions were a little stronger, initially around 15 knots, but it dropped through the morning and became even shiftier throughout the day.
The racing was extremely close, with multiple lead changes keeping the overall results tight. However, Gav and Pete managed to seal the win overall by winning the last race. The second position went to Brett Burvill/James Clark and Max Putman, followed by Gavin Parker and Chris Dob in third place.
The event was a great success, with the sailors showcasing their skills and techniques in the challenging conditions. The top three teams have now set their sights on making it to Travemunde for the F18 Worlds Championship, where they will compete against the best sailors from around the world.
In conclusion, the Western Australia Formula 18 State Titles was an exciting sailing event that showcased the talents of some of the best sailors in the region. The challenging conditions made for some thrilling racing, and the winners, Gavin Colby and Pete Dubbelaar, were thrilled with the victory. The event has set the stage for the sailors to aim for bigger and better things, with the F18 Worlds Championship on the horizon.
