A-Cat Europeans 2022 @Circolo Vela Arco: Steve Brewin #1
2022 A-Cat Europeans @Circolo vela Arco, Final Results
Final day saw 2 races in the Classic fleets and only one in the Open. This due to having rotating fleets once more, lets repeat: Major events like Worlds or Continentals need to be able to handle two parallel courses.
Stevie Brewin (D3 / Brewin Sails) won the last race of the Open fleet and secured the Title, yet another trophy for one of the best A Cat sailors ever. Winning over a loaded competitive entry list the Australian Ace won half the races completed establishing a gap of 5pts ahead of Mischa Heemskerk (DNA F1x/ Mischa Sails) and Kuba Suroviec (D3 / Bryt Sails).
Tight competition and plenty of breeze, but the seasoned Brewin showed all how its done. Designing & building his own sails its another special ingredient for him. Past season I had the chance to finally sail a Brewin DS on my A-Cat, and it was a blast, instant performance gain. Never experienced such difference, which was measured on a weekend vs same sailors swapping to the Brewin the second day.
A testament of his experience & knowhow. Not many have won legacy mode and current Flying mode Europeans & Worlds Titles like Brewin. Also training hours back at home along “‘geriatric”” mate Bundock helps! Stevie told me that in the forgettable days we all went through in 2020/2021 he managed to work and develop his current DS and before I got it he told me it was going to be a “dream” of a sail, and well I can confirm it was.
On the rest of the top 5 we wrote on them during the week, read previous posts.
The A-Cat fleet is filled with talented experienced sailors: Stevie, Mischa, Bundy, Ashby, Anderson, Landy and many others luckily enough we also have the next hotshots to replace them like Suroviec, Ravi Parent, Bendyk, and youths like Andy Landenberger Moritz Weiss and Henry Demesmaeker but the Class need more of them no doubt.
The foiling A-Cat it’s the most challenging performance machine. It has its drawbacks, although we need to agree the special appeal of handling these ‘Exocets’ in the breeze.
Classics discipline
Scott Anderson (Nikita/North/ FiberFoam) won at 68yrs old yet another major event, I remember when Scott won the first Floating crown back in 2015 Worlds at Punta Ala. That’s the beauty of the Classic discipline, being able to sail and compete for as long you have health and the will to do it, Scott adds his sailing and mast (Fiberfoam) building skills to win as decades past bye.
Gustavo Doreste (D3 / Hammer) finished second and Young Moritz Weiss (D3/ Landenberger) won last two races after two DNC yesterday to secure 3rd overall.
Also want to mention Georgio Marchetto, this Italian ACat sailor was born in 1945 and this week competed at Garda with his A-Cat, what a legend along the Nr 1 Foiler in my book!! The one and only, the great Mathias Dietz!
Hats off & full Respect to them and the entire fleet.
