Sail GP: F50s Boat Speed vs True Wind Speed Data (repost)
Yesterday AC75 race was painful to watch, although the AC75 concept did work and look like weapons, main issue as noted first day was light wind perf range. After seeing yesterday’s action it was an eye opener on the small range of operation of these new AC platforms.
AC50/F50s would have flown no issues, and if float mode they would have finished the race.
Maybe for March the AC75 will improve in the lower wind range? Or they will need to start races above +12 knots?? Also we saw 30 knots at 10knots TWS by TNZ AC75, but once they went float mode, never got back.
AC50s/Sail GP F50 are much more agile and can handle transitions in a better way.
I remember how the benchmark measure was 100% airborne time from Bermuda, where is that reference has gone now?
Below data posted back in 2019, from F50s SailGP. TNZ AC50 had surely superior performance.

Graphical data above depicts BS (Boat Speed) vs TWS (True Wind Speed), and its impressive to see how the F50s reached the 30knots realm from 6 to 10knots TWS. Click image for larger size.
We’ll gather next data from Bermuda to compare but wanted to publish as Scott Babbage / Sail GP were kind enough to supply actual data from Sydney Sail GP two days of racing. We requested Lift off speed too, and Scott commented: “Lift off speed doesn’t change much upwind to downwind, on the light air boards we’re seeing liftoff at about 15 knots BS.” Official Sail GP web sailgp.com
This is one of the worst posts about technical sailing I have ever read. Maybe put some more effort into research before having your dig at the Americas cup.
yep seems to be a bit light of facts and a bit biased
my thoughts to
sail racing one’s own boat is mostly about Grace of movement…
true speed then follows.
