This project looked like a weapon already when we published the renders back in October 2017. A 12,8mts Trimaran carbon built. In terms of functionality Trimarans in my view are limited when comparing to cats from same length, but here space, investment level and accommodations are all second to bare full speed. This R42 Trimaran from Grainger is a perfect weapon to race and why not, to escape from Populist / Totalitarian Govs …
What a beast this Trimaran is. It looks even more sharp once built. Congrats to the owners and builders (ATL Composites) for such a machine. Only thing I would add is a set of removable rudder winglets to gain additional stability at high speeds or harsh weather.
In terms of looks an analogy for this Grainger R42 design can easily be compared to an oldie but still weapon: De Tomaso Pantera GT5.
If you have another machine to show, no matter designer or builder send info to catsailingnews gmail com.
One of the first race Venom participated was Adelaide to Port Lincoln, Track gps below. Grainger reports:
“Trimaran Venom (R42 Grainger) had an amazing run in the 2020 Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race after establishing a lead of about about 20 nautical miles over the top monohulls including Naval Group (70’6″ Reichel Pugh), Chinese Whisper (Judel Vrolijk 62), Ichi Ban (Botin 52) and Secret Mens Business (TP52). The tracking images are from the YB Yacht Tracker.
Venom was denied the Race Record when the rudder stock snapped 30n.m. from the finish line.
Venom’s performance was all the more impressive given that she wasn’t carrying a large screecher or gennaker in the reaching and downwind conditions.”
