A-Class Worlds 2019 @Weymouth: Day 3, Mischa Heemskerk Leads
Photos today by Gordon Upton Photography and Paula Kopylowicz / Exploder. More shots by Gordon at his fb page – More by Paula at Exploder fb.
Great day for Mischa Heemskerk (Dna F1x / Mischa Sails) in light 5 to 8 knots unstable wind conditions. he scored coring 1,1 & 2 for the day. Mischa got a 61st (last) on the first day of racing which was steady 4-5knots.
He was the most consistent today while others in the top 5/10 like Calavia (D3/North) & Bendyk (D3/Bryt) got +10th places in last race or a BFD for Surowiec (D3/Bryt).
Consitent races too for his teammates for Bruce Mahoney (F1x/Mischa Sails) to grab second overall getting 9th, a 4th and a 3rd .
Brewin (D3/Brewin) having a low start mid event with 13, 10, 7, 5, 4 for a current 6th overall.
Manolo Calavia was having a great day with two 3rds plus yesterday’s bullet to discard that initial 27th, but a 14th in the last race today left him 15th pts behind Mischa and 1pt of Mahoney to a 3rd overall. Nothing defined yet as Mischa has to defend that 61st from Day 1, every race will sum for him now. Still Mischa looked sharp today in a tricky course race.
Equipment wise top Exploder D3s are using Z27s. Mischa info I have is he changed to a smaller foils before the event due to the light winds expected. Bruce Mahoney performing too with the F1x and Mischa sails, need to check if factory foils or custom. Either way Exploder is launching a new Z foil like say every month…hehe, so top guys are getting latest devels from both builders.
Classics
In the Classics division the Landenbergers (Exploder D3 Classic version / curved foil / Landenberger DS) are commanding the fleet with Landy Jr first overall followed by Dad and Alberto Farnesi 3rd.
Below a race by race report we put together thanks to the the Live updates Jakub Kopylowicz from Exploder did today.
Day 3 Races report we did based in the Live updates form today by Jakub Kopylowicz / Exploder
#1 First race Mischa & Manolo reached the top mark almost together, Calavia first , Mischa behind and Surowiec third. Downwind Mischa went left and Manolo right, places inverted at the gateway from first top mark. 4 to 5 knots at this point in the race. Calavia first , Mischa second and Surowiec third.
Downwind Mischa went left and Manolo right, places inverted at gateway fom top mark. 4 to 5 knots at this point in the race. 3rd windward mark Mischa leads by 100 over Kuba Surowiec and Calavia which defines the first of the day.
#2 Second race a bit more breeze , 6 knots trapeze upwind, course has a favored side, seems to be left for Jakub. Some gusts in, reaching 8-9knots at the gate, Tymek leads followed by Bruce, Roland. Manolo around 5th , Mischa 8th. Only Manolo rounds gate to the left side.
At second top mark is Tymek, Bruce, Manolo and Mischa. Wind now 8 knots. Manolo and Bruce goes left, Mischa goes right side. 3rd Top mark Tymek continues to lead, Manolo second. But Mischa comes from behind to take a great bullet.
#3 Third race winds gets light again, 6knots Jakub thinks foiling will be tricy to achieve. Fleet goes left side, Mischa reaches first to windward. In no foiling conditions Mischa leads to the gate. Now trap conditions in the left side, Mischa get use of it and grabs the second bullet of the day in changing wind conditions.
Classics: R1 with a clear start, more wind now, around 8-9knots. landy leads followed by Farnesi. GBR18 and Landenberger Jr. Wind increasing, now 11-12knots. Landy jr goes for it and climbs two spots. Landy wins sitting on the front beam.
