Worrell 1000 Reunion Race Day 6 – Lay day in Tybee Island, GA (No Racing)
Teams are enjoying a well-earned day off from racing today. Needed maintenance and repairs are being completed in preparation for the 2nd half of the race. Many consider the first half to be merely a warm-up event for the more demanding conditions typical in the Carolinas. The Organizing Authority took advantage of the time to meet and discuss how things have gone so far, anticipated conditions, challenges ahead and the future of the race.
The forecast for the coming week calls for some wet & windy weather. Logistical planning includes the ferry rides on the outer banks and photo boats to catch some of the on-the-water action. Everyone is advised to have their foulies on stand-by. The last of the legs include:
Tybee Island to Isle of Palms, SC – 85 mile leg
Isle of Palms to Surfside Beach SC – 75 mile leg
Surfside to Wrightsville Beach, NC – 90 mile leg
Wrightsville to Atlantic Beach NC – 67 mile leg
Atlantic Beach to Hatteras, NC – 80 mile leg
Hatteras to Kill Devil Hills, NC – 72 mile leg
and the final leg – Kill Devil Hills to the finish at Virginia Beach, VA – 58 mile leg
Along the way, many Worrell Race fans have reached out wanting to be a part of the event. Media outlets in North & South Carolina plan to be at the start/finish beaches to cover the event for their local affiliates. Businesses at several checkpoints will be doing raffles, hosting parties and offering food & refreshments. Oceanfront9 (https://oceanfront9.com/) out of Tidewater, VA will have a welcome celebration at the finish line and one of the event sponsors, The Raven Restaurant in Virginia Beach (https://www.theraven.com/), will play host to the Trophy Ceremony and final party.
The event will be streamed live via Facebook for the 1,000+ followers (and growing) to take virtual part in the festivities. There will also be an announcement regarding the one question people from around the world have been asking: Will there be another Worrell? Stay tuned to find out….
