US A-Class Admiral’s Cup 2019 @Sarasota: Bruce Mahoney 1st

Phoot: Bruce Mahoney, 2018 Admiral’s Cup by Dan Howland / danhowlandyachts.com – 2019 Admiral’s Cup edition went to Bruce Mahoney who won past year and continues to dominate the US A-Class scene. Second place for Jeremy Wilmot and 3rd overall for Bob Hodges.
Woody Cope won on the Classics Division scoring an excellent 5th overall,

A special note to wish Bailey White, US Class President and top local sailor a prompt recovery after a hard gybe crash he had on Saturday, a disliked rib and hurting but seems stable. Get well mate.

Below report by Sam Carter, yet another F18 sailor now racing As along John Tomko who had another good event in the Class with a 4th overall on a 42 boat fleet.  2020 Worlds will be held at Tampa Bay.

Sam had a great F18 Worlds at same venue few months ago and he continues to grab the pace of the A-Cat and foiling, he is sailing a retrofitted Flyer, equipped with T rudders & Z10 boards, he has also designed and fitted a nice custom rake system which is the best custom one I’ve seen yet, more details on a coming post. All work done by himself.

Admiral’s Cup 2019 , race comments by Sam Carter:
“We had 42 boats registered, quite a fleet! The first race was sailed in light air, maybe 4-5kts in the gusts, lulls to near zero. The second race was 6-7 but still not enough to foil. The third race was closer to 8kts, enough for the top guys to foil.

Fourth race was 9-12. Last race (5) was back down around 9. Very marginal foiling.

I had some good runs in the 4th race and Saturday afternoon including a brief period of very solid upwind foiling. The ability to adjust the rudders I think is critical if sailing the boat over 80kg.

All good fun, the upwind work was in 14-16, below that I don’t think it pays as you slide sideways too much and crash off the boards really quickly in the lulls (watched Bruce do it today).

We had a total of 7 races completed, today Sunday was near perfect  and we could
have done a 3rd but lots of folks had early flights and I think.

More races and Jeremy could have put pressure on Bruce who won with a 2pt gap.
