Below daily and detailed onsite report as usual sent by Ben Hall / US Class Assoc:
“The last day of racing in the Aussie Nationals was a chamber of commerce day. Three races in 5-11 kts of breeze…beautiful sunshine, crystal clear water, no weed, and some very interesting sea life.
The foilers ended up with 8 races so they only had one throw out …Glenn threw out a 5th and had 7 firsts…amazing performance as we have come to expect from Glenn…and heard in the boat park…” maybe Glenn should be steering the new ETNZ AC boat”…ha.
Pete Burling finished second and Mischa sailed a consistent series for 3rd. Again the level of the expertise in the top end of the fleet is very impressive. Foiling has advanced to a level that many of the sailors are able to foil effectively. The DNA F1 and the Exploder AD3 are great examples of well thought out production boats.
On the Classic course we sailed three races and since we sailed 9 races we got two throw outs.
The first race was in 5-6 knots. Scottie won this one with Landy second and I was third. Yayy…my best race! The wind built in the second race to 9-11 kts. I had a great start at the boat, tacked right and ended up first at the top mark just in front of Landy…down wind he disappeared trapping nicely. He extended to win and Scotty was second. Graham Parker sailed consistently and moved up to third overall.
The third race had a bit less wind with about 8-10. The Landy/ Scottie show continued. I ended up fifth to get 5th overall… pretty happy with that result. Alberto ended up 4th overall …he was hoping for a bit more breeze.
The rest of the American and Canadian team arrived today and are raring to go. Bob Orr went for a hour and a half sail and came back with a huge grin on his face.
Hard to imagine a better venue.
Congrats to the winners! Now on to to the Worlds which starts Sunday…this is when the rubber will really hit the road.
Thanks to a great organizing committee, super race committee and all the volunteers.
Anyone who runs a big regatta has to take a page out of your book. “
G’day and cheers from Oz
