Rough conditions on final days of Hobie 2017 Multi Worlds & EuropeansSaturday July 29 was the last scheduled racing day of the European and World championships catamaran sailing in the Hobie Cat classes. The past ten days, sailors from 24 countries competed in the Hobie 16 Open,
Hobie Wild Cat en Hobie Tiger class. On Monday and Tuesday qualification

races were sailed for Hobie 16 Open to determine the best 56 teams for the Gold Fleet. Off the coast of Noordwijk they sailed there races from Wednesday on with factory-supplied sails in orange/blue/white. It was a spectacular view for the big number of spectators and visitors in Noordwijk.

Noordwijk for the past 10 days, knew a stormy last two days. From Friday morning on windforce was building up to above 35 knots on Saturday morning. In combination with the big swell, racing had to be postponed for several times and ultimately cancelled. Fortunately already 8 races had been sailed in differing conditions on the days before, so the final ranking was a balanced result for most sailors. One races could be discarded and all top 3 rankings were of international composure.

Hobie Tiger was the smallest class with 6 boats and therefore not an official European Championship. Battle was fierce though, and in the end the IHCA International cup was won by Kai Wippersteg/René Bertheau from Germany. Second were Martijn Elhorst/Peter Schouten (NED) and third were Susanne and Hans van Klaveren from the local club of Noordwijk.

The 2015 world title was prolonged by Mitch Booth from Spain, sailing with his daughter Rita this time. In Garganano (ITA) he was sailing with his son Ruben. Silver medals were won by Blaine Dodds/Charles Girard from South Africa, while Clement Peduzzi/Maxime Blondeau (FRA) traded their 2015 silver medal for bronze this time.

Hobie 16 class attendence was impressive in Noordwijk with 56 boats in the Gold Fleet and 49 in the Silver Fleet. In the Silver Fleet the Dutch teams performed very well. Bronze was won by Carsten and Eske Schermer from Germany. Herbert and Willem Dercksen (NED) won silver and the titel was won by Peter Spijker/Wilbert Hameete from the local club in Noordwijk. In the Gold Fleet battle was (commonly) thight with very small differences in the top of the ranking. The new European champions are Ingo and Sabine Delius from Germany, in front of Jens Göritz/Katrin Wiese (also Germany) and locals Rogier Duijndam/Sonja Steenvoorden from the Netherlands. Two of these 3 teams also made it tot he top 5 of the 2015 Europeans and confirmed their status of top Hobie 16 sailors.

During the prize giving on Saturday night, a lot of positive reactions could be heard from competitors as well as the European and international Hobie class associations. Competitors met with all kinds of conditions during the 10 days of the event, contributing to balanced results in the rankings. The local sailing club ZVN had it all under control on the water as well as ashore, leading to very successful championships in Noordwijk.
