Youth Regatta at Kurnell Catamaran Club: March 18-19

Photo taken by 14 year old Mitch Harden) – One of the issues attached to selecting yet another OD and one manufacturer for a youth boat was the lost opportunity of having the F16 multibrand Class as platforms for kids development as now dads are forced to buy yet another invented Class. But all is done now and the members at Kurnell have established a Youth coaching & regatta where any cat can be sailed by the kids. Bundock & Brewin will take of the event.

Youth Catamaran Regatta at Kurnell
“On March 18 -19 Kurnell Catamaran Club will host a Youth Catamaran Regatta for sailors between the ages of 13 and 18 years. This will be an amazing opportunity for all young cat sailors.

Recently Yachting Australia purchased a fleet of Nacra 15s and has training programs to support an elite group of youth sailors. This is a great initiative for the future of catamaran sailing in Australia. The members at Kurnell Catamaran Club want to provide opportunities for all young sailors; even if they sail a Paper Tiger, an old Maricat, a Hobie 16 or any type of cat. Harken and Boat Crew Gear liked the idea and offered sponsorship of the event. Yardstick handicapping will allow all kids to be competitive. The Kurnell Youth Regatta will give all young sailors access to top level coaching and racing. The focus is on skills development and expert coaches will be working with the young sailors.

This is not an ordinary regatta .The normal club racing will be cancelled for the weekend so all club members can support the youth. Darren Bundock will be joined by Kurnell sailors Steve Brewin and Andrew Williams who will donate their time to train the kids.

The credentials of these coaches are quite impressive. Darren Bundock – Olympic silver medalist, multiple world champion and Red Bull Coach, Steve Brewin – World and National A Class Champion, F18 and Taipan Australian Champion and Andrew Williams – multiple Taipan Australian Champion.

The regatta will attract Australia’s top young catamaran sailors and some kids still developing their racing skills. To be eligible to compete sailors need to be born in or after 1998 and before 2003. Bring, borrow or steal your chosen catamaran. The focus will be on racing training so young sailors need to be familiar with their catamaran. This is not an entry level learn to sail course.

During the weekend the young sailors will mix with some of Australia’s elite racers, socializing and making new contacts.

The cost is $100 for a single handed cat and $115 for double handed. This entry fee includes the competitors’ dinner on Saturday night. There is limited overnight accommodation at the clubhouse or billeting can be arranged. Canteen will be running all weekend.
