Formula 18 at its best again in the Southern Hemisphere, Brett Burvill & Ryan Duffield won the Australian F18 Nats 2016 sailing a Windrush Edge built by Brett in Australia, and quipped with Hyde Sails, after the last event here in Argentina was taken by an Exploder with C2 Mast/Main/Jib/ Nacra Spi. Showing all boats are competitive and sailors are available to decide their weapon of choice at will.
The Edge is has a truly special & unique hull design, Windrush yard has been building Tornados for decades now and all that experience is put in place for their F18. The Edge is also performing in the UK and in Italy where Ferrglia & Bianchini won F18 2015 Nats at Punta Ala.
The Edge is established as a winning design without a doubt. Contact Brett Burvill for yours at www.windrushyachts.com.au
Conditions for the event were high winds to drifting 5 knots, and tricky conditions, no midrange races were held. Burvill had a close fight with Daniel & Nathan van Kerckhof on a C2.
The winners scored 5 bullets , same nr for the runner up out of 11 races.
Both crews were ahead of the pack the entire event and in both ends of the wind range.
Only Brewin could take one from them in the last race held in 6-8 knots. Brewin was close to win other two races, felt quite fast in the breeze and I saw third party comments on that too. The AG+ mast used by Mischa at Kiel felt again too soft for the light stuff, which is the same feedback we had from Heemskerk. Exploder is launching a new mast extrusion, more info soon.
Stephen Medwell (C2) defended 3rd position scoring 4 & 7 for the last two races and got a place in the podium.
Adam Beattie continued to ”boicot” his great performance now with a bfd! finished 4th last race, and clearly he was sailing for top 3 position. Two dnf didn´t help either along his first ocs.
