Nacra F20 FCS vs Flying Phantom
Updat: Informal Upwind Test Video made in BA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcPLiIPVgaY — Sailing Images Pierrick Contin & Sander van der Borch. – I’ve been asked several times on which boat to buy
, specially from guys here in Arg. I have only sail the Flying Phantom so I will just stick to actual data / features / matching pics to compare.
As I have a full detailed archive on the FP from Carnac but not much available on details on the F20C FCS.
Also videos available and comparative results against non foilers in Carnac & Texel.
Boat /Det | Nacra F20C | Flying Phantom
Platform Lenght | 6,2 | 5,52 | Mts |
Platform Width | 3,2 | 3 | Mts |
Mast | 10,45 | 9,6 | Mts |
Jib | 5,2 | 5,5 | m2 |
Main | 21 | 18 | m2 |
Spi | 28 | 24 | m2 |
Weight | 170? | 155 | Kgs |
Rudders | T Winglets | T Winglets
Foils | C+L | C+L | |
Price | 34K Euros* | 32K Euros*
Desingers | Morrelli Melvin | Martin Fischer |
– Foils are the main aspect where they differ (beyond boat size). In the daggerfoil ‘C’ shape, the F20C has an added ‘S’ section in the top. The FP lower section foil is more of ‘V’ , while the F20C goes for a more straight ‘L’
– Rudder setup is quite similar. Both T Winglets. Different system on joints.
– Carbon Snuffer for the FP & Ring + socket for F20C
– Weight for the F20C FCS is not disclosed, F20C standard was 170kg.
As the FP didn´t finished at Texel, it would be nice to see them at Carnac next year and then Texel again. So we just have comparative results against non foilers. See table below along videos for each.
Next year we might get a complete review on both. For now this is the data/material available to do any comp.
I know which I would buy with the $, but my recommendation for buying a +30k boat is trying to sail both and then decide.

*F20C DNC
The most important point is the beam-hull Joint. The F20 offers lots of structural opportunities for improvement in many aspects. The FP seems to be much more professionally engineered and therefore a stiffer and more robust Plattform. my 2ct's from 4years sailing F20c and some hours examine the FP.
I get the impression the main foil on the NACRA is further back compared to the FP. If so are you pushed towards the back of the boat to keep everything balanced on the foils
Weight of the non foiling NACRA F20 Carbon is <170kg
Looks like nacra took those oportunities, heard the beams are improved, maybe check with them..
If you look to the numbers now the Nacra has 10% more sail area and more righting moment by its beam and weight, and longer waterline lenghts if that still counts ;-). from this the nacra should be faster upwind and most like faster on all angles, not?
Hi Jimmy this is true. Our F20 is just rebuild by Nacra to be a F20 FCS in later stage, now we are just waiting for the daggerboards and rudders to complete the rebuild…. We're now sailing with the new daggerboard cases and the new beam. With this said i can say that the new front beam makes a huge differens, much stiffer then the old one.
Hi Collin, what has been reinforced in Detail? wallthickness of beam, inserts, bolts????
In RoundTexel the nacraF20FCS put only one minute early to the second which is a classic nacraF20 ….
They made the dolphin striker irons 'more/overlaping' in to the hulls, cant really explain it without a picture, also they did some work inside the beam but can not realy see it clearly. We have a new forbeam.
Hi, just wanted to say that the 2 second Nacra that did finished had already rudder winglets on it and was also rebuild like ill posted already…. Further without really defending nacra what so ever Peter Vink Sailed the F20FCS 1time before the round texel race. The rudders and daggerboards wich he used were just in too holland that week. So not a lot of practice or tunning…. We have too wait and see for a little bit to see how it is exactly. Please read the report off Peter himself on this site. greetz
We recently changed our F20C beam to an improved one after the original cracked. The beam is exactly the same except 2 changes:
1. Thay inserted a rectangular aluminum profile vertically inside the beam along the entire length, which makes it stronger and stiffer.
2. Dolphin rod after the bends where it is parallel to the beam has been extended, so in addition to two connecting screw, the inboard beam bolt also passes through the dolphin, thereby eliminating the stress point between end of dolphin and hull.
Only problem is shoddy workmanship : the profile was not inserted straight, so nuts could not center properly. After hours of frustration and damage we finally redrilled the holes and managed to connect the beam.
Bottom line, same awfull quality, but this time on a flying machine.
It may be a great boat, but I value my life too much to fly on something built to Nacra standards.
Flying Phantom was way ahead of the Nacra at Texel before they were damaged so I reckon the Phantom is much faster.
HA HA HA HA CYCLONE! What an assumption. Checkout the below pictures taken at the some point. Check out the time dude!! Before you write anything. Check your facts. What a joke!
But the Nacra is much faster than a Flying phantom. My Father have one and he was much faster than the Phantome
Hi Cyclone our Nacra F20 FCS was much faster than the FL of FL Although flies higher but is not so easy to control once and the wind came FL had no chance because the foils are built differently than the Nacra is a completely different Printip the FL is more a boat for good sailors in the Nacra Nacra for professionals is also much harder to Bedinen why Trained Ben Ansley also with the NacraFCS
