A-Class North Americans 2013 @ABYC for Matt Struble
Images ABYC. Total domination for Matt Strubble at Long Beach, California to clinch his 2nd North Americans. 20 boat fleet at ABYC, where the 2012 Worlds were held. 9 bullets and a 3rd as discard for Matt, pity he couldn´t show his talent at Isla Morada hurricane Worlds.
Matt won the 2013 NAs with his own designed & built A-Cat. (Photo above.) I’m always impressed with this kind of achievements with sailors racing their own toys and I hope Matt can attend to Takapuna with it.
I contacted Matt to tell us about a little more about him , later next week a detailed insight on his design.

Matt Strubble : “I did design and build my A cat last year. It is the second A cat that I have built. The first A cat I built was designed by Peter Cogan and my current boat is my own design.
I had high hopes for the Worlds last year in Islamorada, but as you know hurricane Sandy was the head line of the event.
The A cat I am sailing now is my eighth one that I have owned. Waterat, Boyers, EVO, DNA, and a couple of my boats. Until now I did not realize I have had so many A cats. Other catamarans I have sailed are F-18’s, Nacra 20’s, Nacra 5.5’s, Nacra 5.8’s, and some larger multihulls 25′ – 40′ trimarans and catamarans.
I recently moved from Michigan to California and my focus on A cats has increased with the change of climate. In Michigan, I was really focused on DN ice boating with some good results. Three World Championships, one European Championship, two North American Championships, and a bunch of Regional Championships. I would race multihulls in the summer and did win some regattas, but my focus was on the winter sailing. One catamaran event I am very proud to win is the US Sailing Hobie Alter Cup. I have won the event four times with four different crews. Domonique Martin is one of those crew and is now my wife and we have two small children. Along with those wins, I have won a Nacra 20 North Americans.
Now A cats are my main sailing focus and this years A Cat North Americans was a great event. The sailing was in Long Beach California, so a short drive from my home in San Diego. The regatta was sailed both inside Long Beach harbor and in the open Pacific ocean where we sailed the F-18 Worlds. The wind was good with a range of 5 – 15knots of breeze. Smooth water inside the harbor and ocean waves outside.
At Long Beach I sailed with a new Glaser membrane sail on a FiberFoam mast”
