Phantom Foiling Vid #2: Americas Cup preview

Sent by Alex Udin / Sail Innovation. Foiling no spi a la ETNZ & Luna Rossa AC72. The Moths are getting themselves a future rival with all the cat flying projects going around. Forget about any technical analysis , this is just pure adrenaline fun. They claim 26,5 Knots in 9-11Knots True wind.

Yeah, that´s it! Congratulations, well done!

    Jesus. H. Christ.

Where does Dr. Fischer live, so that I can ask him to be my guru?

As far as I can tell, they're pressing down in the puffs and working up in the lulls. My math and geometry are terrible (forgive me!), but does this not mean they are sailing a TWA of >90° with just main/jib?

    Hi,
we are two designers working on the foils: Guillaume Verdier and myself. Each of us designed several sets of foils and the choice which foil to use has not yet been made – testing is still underway.
The foils used on this video were designed by Guillaume.

    cheers

    Fantastic work guys!

What are the possibilities for a singlehander? It would be hard to pull the windward foil up every gybe.

    Hi,

Is the setup classlegal? If not, what will it take do make it?

    Very nice work btw!

Great job! Thanks Martin for sharing. Awesome steady flight.
Is there a reason why the windward foil is up? I remember the early days of cat foiling with both sides down.
Is this to reduce the drag?
As the previous anonymous said, getting the board up or down is one more thing to do.

The only thing related to the F18 in this boat is the shape of the hull, and stop counting. You aready have single handed flyers, just check Mischa's flights.

No way that this conf can be effective for a single handed racing cat. They are copying AC72 mode, but the rules there forbid both foils down so it is not a performance oriented decision in first place.

Maybe would end being the best alternative related to drag, but not the origin of this conf. I will check with Udin on advantages related to drag.

We believe foiling on 3 appendices (1 foils, 2 rudders) have several advantages compared to 4 (2 foils, 2 rudders):

    – Using the windward foils significantly reduce the Righting Moment by lifting the windward hull. The Righting Moment is a kind of Horse Power of the boat.

    – You reduce the drag by having all the lift only on one foil.

    – The height stability while you heel is better with one foils, with 2 foils you have to sail the boat very flat in order to have both foils on the water.

The shape of the foils we use are auto stabilized, while the boat accelerate and the boat want to foil too high, the lift of the foils decrease to keep a constant height unlike the "C" or "J" foils who also want to lift higher until they finally ventilates and fall…

We believe this system is viable on a double handled boat (we were already lifting the windward dagger board on every tack on the F18), but it is too complicated for a single handled boat like A Class.

    Alex, Martin,
    Merci for these clear explanations!
Can't wait to see the first production boat on the water.
Have you made progress in defining a box rule with other builders?
    A+

    Hi Philippe,

We are not at that stage yet but we actually believe in a One Design class with maybe leaving the sails open with a very simple measurement rule like on the Tornado. We are still not sure, the measurement is a nightmare in the F18, we want to get rid of it…

    Cheers

Hey all those foiling cat fan out there, who would buy one of these and if you would how much would you pay?
