Olympics, Rio 2016: Nacra 17 , The Chosen One
Well, its over and I was wrong, I thought the Viper was going to be elected on performance and established class, no competition arose for mixed and the Nacra 17, that was my favorite and The Candidate , just a cad and a new boat. But Nacra did a good job putting it all together for the trials, a nice concept became a reality and the choice of the sailors at Santander.
In my view, the key for the N17 being the choice, beyond actual chances of being selected, was lasting more than one Olympic cycle beyond Mixed option, this was The major consideration as remarked here many times. As ‘Open’ must return.
Congrats to Gunnar, Peter and the Nacra Team for investing and placing an extra bid. Now more hard work is coming.
The vote went 20-15 to N17 over the Viper. The Tornado was proposed but not seconded for a final vote.
Also congrats to AHPC for the hard work on building a great boat that helped the expansion and promotion of the F16 like no other, and I think it may be better for them, the F16 will continue to grow and the Viper will continue its successful path, and right now, the only choice for training Mixed, and also the defacto Olympic feeder class.
Roland, No excuses now, I’d better see you in Rio 2016.
A new Olympic Era is born.
