Extreme Series Nice: Win for Rothschild, Steinacher to hospital

“Red Bull Extreme Sailing tactician was knocked off the catamaran while the team was leading in the middle of the fourth race of the day at the 2011 multihull World Series. The double Olympic gold medal winner was hit on the head by a rudder blade weighing 15 kg while the 20-meter high catamaran was racing at high speed. Steinacher was knocked into the water and needed treatment in hospital afterwards.

He was treated with lacerations and bruises, receiving 16 stiches on his head. Red Bull skipper Roman Hagara said: “These boats can be so dangerous that you actually should have a weapons permit to be operating them. I’m just happy that nothing more happened to Hans Peter. We’re very fortunate that it wasn’t any worse”
