Spanish F18, A-Class & H16 Championships

Report Sent by Claus Denk —— Here in Spain the different catamaran classes are combined into one
“Catamaran Class” which is recognized oficially by the RFEV (Real
Federación Española de Vela). The catamaran class has three annual
events: the Spanish Cup, the Spanish Championship and a Long Distance
Cup. In these events usually we gather in between 70-100 catamarans,
each of them competing in “their” class: Hobie 16, A-class, Formula 18
and Interseries. In Interseries we include all cats which do not belong
to the other categories, and they compete by the means of a rating
system (SCHRS).

This weekend we had our national championship in Castelldefels,
perfectly hosted by the Club Nautico Castelldefels. Nice weather, 10
knots the first day, light conditions around 4-5 knots the second day,
and 8-12 knots the third day of the competition.

In A class we have a very high level, with some of the sailors in the
top 20 in the last worlds. Manuel Calavia wins the spanish championship
on a DNA with authority:

1 MANUEL CALAVIA ESP-1 R.C.N.BARCELONA – 9 points

2 JOSE ANTONIO LOPEZ BECERRA ESP-52 R.C.MARITMO BARCELONA – 19 points

3 GUSTAVO DORESTE ESP-72 R.C.MARITMO BARCELONA – 19 points

In Hobie 16 its the younger sailors
that are taking the lead,

1 JACOBO MIQUEL LÓPEZ & PAUL STIEBLER CASTRO ESP-108815 – 14 points

2 MARC JOVANI LLOPIS & ROCIO PIRIS LLOPIS ESP-110227 – 17 points

3 JUAN LLABRÉS & ANA TOMAS MIRALLES ESP-109550 – 25 points

The exiting Formula 18 class is relatively young in Spain, and has been
activated by the World Championships 2008 in Nigran:

1 LUIS SANTOS & JOAO DUARTE POR-3 13 points

2 TONI RIVAS MAS & JORDI SANCHEZ PEREZ ESP-21 19 points

3 ROBERT FIJNHEER & PETER STIEBLER CASTRO ESP-29 23 points

The winner of the race is a team from Portugal (portuguese sailors come
to our regatas and we go to regatas in Portugal), Luis Santos and Joao
Duarte on an Infusion. The best spanish team and as such the winners of
the spanish championship are Toni Rivas and Jordi Sánchez on a Wildcat.
Toni Rivas used to sail in the Tornado class, he was the sparring
partner for Fernando Echavarri during the Bejing 2008 campaign.

The Interseries class is dominated by the FX-1 fleet, the winners with 8
bullets are Marc Verdaguer Foz with Jordi Booth.
