“I’ve been hanging on the beach chatting with Greg Goodall from AHPC. photo: Houston Yacht Club/Beth Gibson
Amazingly interesting guy – he has been telling me how they come up with the concept for a new boat.
They start with a list of ‘things that definitely work’, ‘things that definitely don’t work’ and ‘innovations’ that they investigated. They model up the hulls using the Cad programs Catia, Solidworks and Alias for the surfacing.
We discussed programs that model water, but he said the most useful simulation tool was the one they use for stress analysis.
After finalising the CAD design they get a plug made for the mold (sls foam covered in fibreglass). He said it all comes in and clicks together – in fact the only thing they changed was taking 5mm off the tramp to make it tighter.
He remembers when boats were made by hand fettling the shape of the hulls!
We talked about aerofoils, aeroplanes, centre of resistance, curved dagger boards, the cascading pulley system that they have utilised on the C2….
I have been enjoying myself at least!

–Race 7 ‘A’ Fleet 05/26/10
Thomas, Melvin, Easton, Shafer and Reiss have not yet been in the B fleet – can they avoid relegation this time?

– Start Time: 15:20 Conditions – 8 Knots, smooth
– Windward Mark: Thomas, Jason, Casey, Melvin, Easton, Shafer, Newsome, Glaser, Reiss, Gillespie Big lefty after they rounded the windward mark.
– Roundings at the bottom: Thomas, Melvin, Jason, Newsome, Reiss, Glaser, Casey, Shafer, Easton, Gillespie
The difference between 4th and 8th so close at this point – then Newsome had problems getting the spinnaker down and moved into last position.
– Windward Mark: Thomas, Melvin, Jason, Glaser, Casey, Reiss, Shafer, Easton, Gillespie, Newsome Finish time: Approx 15:50
Finishing order:
Position: 1 Thomas, 2 Melvin, 3 Glaser, 4 Jason, 5 Casey, 6 Reiss, 7 Shafer, 8 Gillespie, 9 Easton ,10 Newsome
Protests – None

Other:
Melvin is 6pts clear of Thomas (Greg Thomas pictured below) at this point, with Easton in third – but Easton has been flushed into the B fleet leaving better positions available for Shafer and Reiss. The wind seems to be holding now, but how many races will there be? B fleet are getting ready to go out now, but it is uncertain whether the A fleet will get to go out again this afternoon.”

–Race 8 ‘A’ Fleet 05/26/10
Last race of the day and it’s all the main contenders going out in A fleet!

– Start Time: 17:40 Conditions – 7 Knots, smooth
– Windward Mark: Melvin, Thomas, Casey, Glaser, Palmer, Shafer, Jason, Reiss, DeLave, Tomko First 6 boats are really close on the second leg
– Roundings at the bottom: Thomas, Casey, Glaser, Melvin, Palmer, Shafer, Jason, Reiss, DeLave, Tomko
– Windward Mark: Casey, Glaser, Thomas, Jason, Melvin, Palmer, Shafer, Tomko, DeLave, Reiss

Finish time: Approx 18:10
Finishing order:
Positions: 1 Casey, 2 Jason, 3 Thomas, 4 Glaser, 5 Shafer, 6 Palmer, 7 Melvin, 8 Tomko, 9 DeLave, 10 Reiss
Protests – None

Other:
So Reiss has flushed for the first time. So now it’s just Thomas, Melvin and Shafer that have stayed out of the B fleet so far, are we looking at the top 3?

Local team Tomko and Dan DeLave are the other teams in the dreaded bottom 3 places. As if it’s not bad enough to get flushed out of the A fleet, those teams will also have to tear down their boats and set up a boat in the morning to go out with the B fleet.
Good job to the ‘other’ youth team, Taylor Palmer and Mac. That good result keeps them starting in A fleet tomorrow. That won’t hurt their position in the table. “
